Got Unexpected Guests and Your House is a Mess? There is a Way Out.
No one likes receiving unexpected guests, especially when your house is a mess. A research by www.londoncleaningsystem.co.uk found that as many as 77% of Brits are ashamed by the mess when receiving unexpected guests.
But what can you do when you already hear the doorbell? Believe it or not but there is a solution. Multiple solutions! Here’s what you can do:
Take them outside. Have a backyard terrace or patio? There’s your solution unless it’s cold or pouring rain of course. And while you’re entertaining your guests, have your partner quickly tidy up in case they decide to stay for a longer period of time. And don’t forget to clean the bathroom because sooner or later they will going to use it.
Politely reject them. You obviously need an excuse if you don’t want to hurt their feelings. One of the easiest and most elegant solutions is to pretend that you were just about to leave, adding that you are really sorry but that your friends are expecting you. They won’t be happy but most people won’t resent you because after all, they did show up unannounced.
Take them to a restaurant. This is a little bit expensive solution but if you neither want to reject them or let them in (and don’t have a backyard terrace or patio), it’s worth considering. Again, you will need some kind of a reason why you don’t want to host your guests at your home but for most people, having no food for any reason (e.g. your fridge broke down) will do.
Let them in but don’t apologise. Act like everything is normal and resist the temptation to apologise. It’s your home and you have nothing to apologise about, especially when people pop around unannounced. In addition, it probably isn’t as bad as you think it is. Also, real friends won’t judge you if your home is not perfectly tidy and squeaky clean.
Be prepared. This is easier said than done but the best solution for unexpected guests is not to allow them to come at a bad time when it comes to cleanliness and tidiness of your home – at least most of your home. The thing is that you need only two rooms to look decent to impress your guests – kitchen or living room and bathroom. And all it takes is just a few minutes a day and you will never ever feel ashamed again due to the state of your home.
